Police seal off PDP national secretariat amid factional tensions

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), FCT Command, on Wednesday cordoned off the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national secretariat at Wadata Plaza, Abuja, using barbed wire and patrol vehicles, halting access to the facility.
The action followed Tuesday’s violent clash between two factions of the party at the secretariat.
Large coils of razor wire were deployed around the perimeter fence, blocking the main gates, while police vehicles obstructed both entry and exit points.
Riot control units and security personnel were stationed at strategic locations to maintain order.
The confrontation involved supporters of the newly elected National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki, and those aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Both factions had planned parallel meetings at the same venue, escalating tensions as prominent party figures, including Wike, the suspended National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, Turaki, and Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi) and Seyi Makinde (Oyo), arrived.
Police intervened by deploying tear gas to disperse the crowd and restore calm.
The clashes followed the PDP’s controversial elective national convention in Ibadan, where Wike, Anyanwu, and their supporters were expelled for alleged anti-party activities.
Turaki’s new national Working Committee was elected at the same event.
In response, a factional National Executive Committee (NEC), led by Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed, also announced the expulsion of Makinde, Bala Mohammed, and Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal.
After gaining access to his office, Turaki reiterated his commitment to the party and pledged to continue defending Nigeria’s democracy.
