Senate president mourns passing of Segun Awolowo Jr

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has described the sudden death of Mr. Segun Awolowo Jr., grandson of the late nationalist Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as a profound loss to the Awolowo family, the Yoruba community, and the nation at large.

In a statement issued through his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, on Saturday, Akpabio expressed his deep shock and sorrow over the demise, noting that Nigeria had lost a “brilliant mind and a symbol of public-spirited service.

“The news of the passing of my friend and brother, Segun, reached me unexpectedly.

”I am deeply shocked. Yet, we cannot question the will of our Creator, who determines the time of our arrival and departure,” Akpabio said.

He extended heartfelt condolences to the Awolowo family of Ikenne, Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun, and the people of the state, describing the loss as “irreplaceable and profoundly painful.”

Paying tribute to the former Executive Director and CEO of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Akpabio hailed Awolowo Jr. as a distinguished lawyer, devoted family man, and compassionate citizen whose contributions to national development are enduring.

“Segun’s legacy as a talented lawyer and kind-hearted individual will continue to inspire us.

”His impact on the legal profession and society at large will be remembered for generations,” the Senate President added.

He also prayed that God would grant the Awolowo family the resilience to bear their loss, emphasising that Segun Awolowo Jr.’s life and service would continue to serve as a beacon for all who admired his dedication.

Akpabio also conveyed the sympathies of the people of Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District and members of the 10th Senate, praying for solace for the bereaved family.

“May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may those he left behind find strength in the treasured memories of his life,” he said.
