President Bola Tinubu has told the leadership of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) that his administration has stabilised the country and moved the economy away from the threat of collapse.
Tinubu made the statement on Tuesday at the State House in Abuja while receiving the bishops, led by the CBCN President, Most Rev. Matthew Ndagoso.
The President said reforms introduced by his government had placed Nigeria on a stronger footing, adding that the uncertainty surrounding the economy when he assumed office had eased.
“The country has been placed on a sound footing. The economy has recovered.
”The alarm for bankruptcy and dark tunnel of uncertainty that we had when I came in has been changed, ” he said.
According to Tinubu, his administration inherited both the achievements and challenges of the previous government but has worked to stabilise the nation while creating what he described as a path toward prosperity.
“This government has stabilised, and there is prosperity on the horizon. Life is improving, ” he added.
The President also highlighted government programmes aimed at improving citizens’ welfare, including the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which he said would continue to support access to education.
On security, Tinubu assured the bishops that efforts were ongoing to tackle terrorism, banditry and kidnapping through improved intelligence gathering, stronger institutions, better equipment and increased support for security personnel.
He disclosed that the expansion of the armed forces had been approved, with plans to provide more equipment and build additional barracks.
“We will defeat terrorism. It should be part of your sermons, ” he said.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and take advantage of opportunities in education, entrepreneurship and skills development, stressing that human capital remains key to reducing poverty.
The meeting also touched on concerns raised by the Catholic leaders, including insecurity, quality education, democratic stability, poverty reduction and the need for credible elections in 2027.
The CBCN President called on the government to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure a free and fair electoral process, describing it as one of the most important legacies Tinubu could leave behind.
