EFCC releases Malami after initial interrogation, schedules fresh appointment

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), says he has been released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following an initial round of questioning by the anti-graft agency.
Malami disclosed his release in a statement posted on X on Saturday, explaining that investigators had fixed another date for continued discussions regarding allegations he described as “fabricated” and unfounded.
The former minister said his visit to the EFCC was smooth and that he voluntarily presented himself in line with his long-standing commitment to transparency.
“I give glory to Allah for His divine intervention.
“The engagement was successful, and I have been released with a scheduled appointment for further engagement as the truth behind the fabricated allegations continues to unfold, ” he wrote.
Malami added that he had promised to keep Nigerians updated on the process, stressing that the ideals of accountability and openness, which he claimed had guided his public service career would continue to shape his response to the inquiry.
On Friday, Malami had publicly confirmed that the EFCC invited him for questioning, saying he was ready to comply fully with the agency’s request.
“As a law-abiding and patriotic citizen, I reaffirm my commitment to honour the invitation,” he wrote in the earlier post.
He noted that he had informed his family and associates about the development and was prepared to clarify any issues raised during the investigation.
Malami emphasised that principles such as honesty and integrity had defined his conduct both in office and after leaving government.
He assured Nigerians that he would continue to provide updates “in the interest of transparency and public awareness”.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not made public the specific allegations or the scope of the investigation involving the former justice minister.
