Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Friday inaugurated a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Ahoro Esinele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area.
The commission, chaired by retired Court of Appeal Justice (Prof.) Mojeed Owoade, is expected to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and recommend measures to prevent future security breaches.
Mrs. Olamide Sandra Tella would serve as secretary, while other members include security experts, legal professionals, academics and civil society representatives tasked with conducting a thorough investigation.
Speaking at the inauguration in Ibadan, Makinde described the abduction as an attack not only on the affected communities but also on every child’s right to safe education.
He expressed appreciation for the safe return of the victims, saying the inquiry was established to uncover the truth, identify failures and strengthen security systems protecting schools across the state.
The governor stressed that the commission was not designed to undermine security agencies but to examine all factors surrounding the incident and provide solutions that would prevent similar occurrences.
Makinde recalled his personal connection to the area, noting that his father taught at St. Luke’s, Ahoro Dada, in 1959, a history that deepened his commitment to addressing the incident.
He said the experience reinforced his call for an independent assessment, adding that justice requires accountability, reforms and lessons that ensure children are never again exposed to such dangers.
The commission has been given an initial one-month period to complete its assignment, with possible extension if required to guarantee a comprehensive and credible investigation.
Justice Owoade assured Nigerians that the panel would focus solely on establishing the truth, promising that members would carry out their responsibilities with professionalism and integrity.
