Lamido voices concern over PDP leadership crisis, signals openness to alliances

Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has raised alarms over the deepening leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that it could weaken the party’s position as Nigeria’s main opposition.
Speaking at a PDP stakeholders’ meeting held at his residence in Kano on Monday, Lamido said the gathering was intended to update party members on ongoing efforts to resolve internal divisions.
He revealed that he has already initiated consultations with PDP governors and Dr. Bukola Saraki, chairman of the party’s Reconciliation Committee, with further discussions scheduled for the coming days.
Lamido urged members to remain patient and avoid actions that could worsen tensions, stressing that despite its current difficulties, the PDP remained the only credible opposition capable of driving political stability, economic growth, and national security in Nigeria.
He also called on Nigerians to demonstrate patriotism, dedication, and personal sacrifice, emphasising that these values are essential for national reconstruction.
Addressing PDP members in Jigawa, Lamido assured them that they would still have the opportunity to contest the 2027 general elections under the PDP platform and encouraged them to carry this message to grassroots supporters.
While he did not dismiss the possibility of forming future alliances, Lamido clarified that any such partnerships would only be considered after all internal conflict-resolution mechanisms within the party have been fully exhausted.
The former governor’s remarks highlight a commitment to preserving party unity while preparing for the 2027 elections, signaling both caution and strategic foresight within the PDP leadership.
