President Tinubu congratulates Super Eagles on AFCON 2025 bronze medal finish

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, for clinching the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The team secured third place after defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties on Saturday, following a goalless draw in regulation time, overcoming the seven-time African champions.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended the players for bouncing back from their semi-final loss to host nation Morocco and ending the tournament on a high note.

“The players demonstrated resilience, determination, and the enduring Nigerian spirit by overcoming disappointment to claim a podium finish,” the President said.

He noted that despite the semi-final defeat, the team’s response reflected the can-do attitude associated with Nigerians.

“Our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off,” he added.

President Tinubu also expressed pride in the team, highlighting that Nigerians would celebrate as the players received their bronze medals in Rabat.

“This bronze medal surely feels good like gold,” he said.

The achievement marks a proud moment for Nigerian football and a strong finish to an otherwise challenging tournament.

Also, in a statement issued late Saturday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, congratulated the team on behalf of the government and citizens, praising their performance throughout the tournament.

He said the Super Eagles displayed courage and unity from the group stages to the final match in Casablanca, adding that their determination on the pitch lifted national pride and inspired Nigerians both at home and abroad.

The minister noted that the team’s fighting spirit, particularly against strong opposition, underscored their commitment to excellence.

He also commended the coaches, support staff and players for their dedication and sacrifices during the competition.
