Yusuf’s Aso Rock visit fuels political speculation

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano, on Monday held a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.

The visit has intensified speculation over possible political realignments ahead of future elections.

Governor Yusuf arrived at the President’s office in the afternoon and spent more than three hours inside.

He declined to speak with journalists after the meeting, offering no clarification on the purpose of his visit.

The meeting comes amid sustained reports that the Kano governor might defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the All Progressives Congress.

Although no official statement has been made, the development has renewed debate within Kano’s political space.

The NNPP leadership has openly opposed any move by the governor to join the APC.

Party officials insisted that such a decision would go against the collective interest of their supporters in Kano State.

Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, national leader of the NNPP, has repeatedly warned party members against defection.

He described political cross-carpeting as betrayal and insisted it rarely produces lasting success.

The reported defection plans have reportedly created divisions between Yusuf’s supporters and loyalists of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

The disagreement has further heightened political tension within the state.

Kwankwaso has maintained that the NNPP’s strength lies in popular support rather than elected officials.

He said the party remained firmly rooted among the people of Kano despite ongoing speculations.

With no official explanation from Governor Yusuf or the Presidency, uncertainty continued to surround the meeting.

Observers said the visit could have far-reaching implications for Kano politics in the coming months.
