Actors Guild immortalises late Junior Pope

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has officially immortalised the late Nollywood star JohnPaul Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope, by unveiling Junior Pope Nollywood City in Enugu State.
The initiative, which includes 150 plots of land, aims to honour the late actor’s enduring legacy and provide tangible benefits to members of the guild.
The ceremony, held at Ako Nike in Enugu, saw AGN President Emeka-Rollas Ejezie hand over land allocation documents to Junior Pope’s wife, Jennifer Odonwodo.
In addition, three plots were set aside for Junior Pope’s sons as a lasting family legacy.
Speaking at the groundbreaking event, Ejezie described the project as a historic milestone for both the guild and the Nollywood industry.
“Though he left us too soon, his spirit continues to inspire us to build structures that will outlive us all.
“This is the planting of a seed that will grow into shelter, opportunity, unity, and remembrance, ” he said.
The initiative, he explained, reflects AGN’s commitment to member welfare. For decades, actors have contributed significantly to Nigeria’s cultural identity without corresponding institutional support.
“Today, we make clear that the welfare of our members is not a slogan – it is a responsibility,” Ejezie said.
“Through this project, Nollywood practitioners will have access to affordable land ownership and a physical home for training, administration, and creativity.”
The new city would also host the Junior Pope Creative Hub and a permanent AGN Zonal and Enugu State Secretariat, providing a centralized space for artistic development, workshops, and administrative functions.
AGN’s Enugu Chapter Chairman, Brown Ene, who initiated the project, highlighted its dual purpose: to honour Junior Pope and to encourage younger actors.
“This is to show that dedication, responsibility, and service to the guild are recognised and rewarded,” Ene said.
He also confirmed that the three plots reserved for Junior Pope’s children will be formally handed over to their mother, Jennifer.
Mrs Jennifer Odonwodo expressed heartfelt gratitude to the guild. “It’s a great day, even though it brings mixed emotions.
“I wish he was here to see this honour, but I’m happy it’s happening. It shows that he truly lives on through his work and legacy in the industry, ” she said.
Junior Pope, who tragically died in April 2025 along with four colleagues in a boat accident on the Anam River, was widely admired for his professionalism and contribution to Nollywood.
The new Junior Pope Nollywood City is expected to serve as a permanent reminder of his impact and a source of inspiration for generations of actors to come.
