APC open to more governors, opposition panic ‘unnecessary’ – Sule

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa, has dismissed concerns that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is discouraging defections by serving governors, insisting that the ruling party remains open to new entrants.

Speaking on Politics Today on Thursday, Sule addressed the recent wave of defections to the APC and questioned why opposition parties appeared anxious about governors leaving.

“Why will a governor leaving become a betrayal? Why will it become a big problem if the governors will not make any impact?” he asked.

Sule noted that the APC recently welcomed its 29th serving governor, Plateau State’s Caleb Mutfwang, following a defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The party had also received the Governor of Taraba State, expected to be formally welcomed soon.

“These governors are selling the party, themselves, and Mr. President. Most likely, a few more governors will join,” Sule added, while dismissing fears that the increasing number of APC governors could create a one-party state.

“There is no way all 36 governors will belong to one party. Even if that happened, Nigeria would still not become a one-party state.”

Since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, several governors have defected from opposition parties, including Abba Yusuf of Kano (NNPP); Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers, Peter Mbah of Enugu, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Douye Diri of Bayelsa, and Agbu Kefas of Taraba (all from PDP).

Sule expressed confidence in the APC’s prospects for the 2027 general elections, asserting that the contest will be between candidates rather than a confrontation between the APC and the people.

The recent defections have been linked to internal crises within opposition parties, intensifying debates over the political landscape ahead of the 2027 polls.
