Kano Govt. moves to end emirship crisis

Barely five days after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf formally joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Kano State Government has indicated that a long-running dispute over the state’s emirship is nearing resolution.
The conflict, which has persisted for almost two years, erupted following the removal of the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, and the subsequent reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II, resulting in parallel claims to the Kano Emirate.
Speaking on Thursday, State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Waiya, disclosed that the government had initiated political and reconciliation-driven measures aimed at ending the stalemate and ensuring a single, substantive Emir emerges.
“The Kano State Government assures you that very soon, the emirate dispute will be resolved.
”We are now one, and the government is committed to dialogue with all stakeholders to bring lasting peace to the Kano Emirate,” Waiya said.
He added that the resolution could involve voluntary withdrawal by some claimants or reconciliation through mutual agreement among the parties.
Supporting this view, Governor Yusuf’s Political Adviser, Alhaji Mustapha Bakwana, told a local radio station that unifying the emirate under one leadership was critical to Kano’s political stability and overall development.
The government sources further revealed that a political understanding between former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Governor Yusuf included discontinuing competing claims over both the 15th and 16th Emirs, paving the way for a consensual and broadly accepted solution to the prolonged crisis.
