The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says prices of key petroleum products, including petrol and cooking gas, recorded marginal declines in December 2025, offering slight relief to households and businesses.
According to the NBS Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) Price Watch released on Monday in Abuja, the average retail price of petrol dropped to N1,048.63 per litre in December 2025, down from N1,189.12 recorded in December 2024.
The figure represents an 11.81 per cent year-on-year decrease.
The bureau also reported a month-on-month decline of 1.20 per cent when compared with the N1,061.35 per litre recorded in November 2025.
State-by-state analysis showed that Kogi recorded the highest average petrol price at N1,104.45 per litre, followed by Imo at N1,086.26 and Yobe at N1,081.80.
Oyo recorded the lowest average price at N996.55, with Kebbi and Nasarawa following at N1,003.08 and N1,011.05 respectively.
On a zonal basis, the North-East recorded the highest average petrol price at N1,073.67 per litre, while the South-West had the lowest at N1,029.51.
In a related development, the NBS said the average price of a 5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (cooking gas) also declined in December 2025, dropping to N5,360.43 nationwide.
The bureau attributed the reduction to easing supply pressures toward the end of the year.
The data further indicated that diesel prices experienced a slight moderation during the same period, with the average retail price falling to N1,401.63 per litre in December 2025 from N1,409.61 recorded in November.
Analysts said the marginal reductions across petrol, diesel and cooking gas prices could help ease transportation and household energy costs, although they note that prices remain significantly higher than previous years.
The NBS said it would continue to monitor price movements across states and zones to provide timely data for policy and planning.s
