NDDC pushes blue economy drive

The Niger Delta Development Commission has renewed its commitment to promoting the Blue Economy as a catalyst for regional growth.

Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, gave the assurance while hosting former Tunisian Prime Minister, Mr. Mehdi Jomaa, on Monday in Abuja.

According to a statement by Corporate Affairs Director, Seledi Thompson-Wakama, the visit preceded the 2026 Blue Economy Investment Summit.

The summit is scheduled to take place in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Jomaa was accompanied by members of his delegation during the engagement.

He was received by Ogbuku, Executive Director of Corporate Services, Mr. Ifedayo Abegunde, and Abuja Liaison Office Director, Mrs. Mary Nwaeke.

During discussions, Ogbuku described the blue economy as central to the commission’s development agenda.

He said the Niger Delta’s coastal and marine resources present vast opportunities for employment and economic expansion.

He added that the sector could drive youth empowerment and environmental sustainability.

The NDDC boss explained that the upcoming summit aims to attract investors and showcase global best practices.

He noted that the initiative would position the region as a hub for marine and coastal development.

Ogbuku emphasised the need for strong institutions and responsible leadership to achieve success.

He stressed collaboration among governments, investors, development agencies and host communities.

The managing director also highlighted ongoing projects tied to the blue economy.

These included infrastructure upgrades, environmental programmes and youth-focused initiatives.

Community-based development efforts were also outlined during the meeting.

In his remarks, Jomaa praised the commission’s vision for sustainable marine development.

Drawing from Tunisia’s experience, he underscored the value of strategic planning and environmental protection.

He also highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in unlocking marine potential.

Jomaa said the dialogue strengthened African partnerships in blue economy governance.

Both leaders agreed that Africa’s future growth depends on managing marine resources sustainably.
