Dangote Refinery achieves historic full capacity milestone

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has recorded a historic achievement, becoming the first refinery in the world to sustain full production at 650,000 barrels per day on its Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) and Motor Spirit (MS) Block.

Following a scheduled maintenance exercise, both units are now operating at optimal capacity, marking a landmark moment in global refining operations.

The refinery began an intensive 72-hour post-maintenance performance test in collaboration with its licensor, UOP, to ensure operational efficiency and confirm compliance with international standards.

Chief Executive Officer David Bird hailed the milestone as a demonstration of the refinery’s engineering precision and operational strength.

“Our teams have shown exceptional expertise in stabilising both the CDU and MS Block. This achievement underscores the reliability and engineering quality that define our operations.

”We remain committed to producing high-quality refined products that will transform Nigeria’s energy landscape,” Bird said.

The CDU and MS Block, which include the naphtha hydrotreater, isomerisation unit, and reformer unit, are now running steadily at full nameplate capacity.

Phase 2 performance tests for other processing units are scheduled to commence next week.

During the recent festive period, the refinery supplied between 45 and 50 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) daily.

With the CDU and MS Block now fully restored, production can comfortably rise to 75 million litres of PMS daily for the domestic market.

The refinery said the milestone would strengthen Nigeria’s push toward energy self-sufficiency, reduce dependence on imports, and bolster its emergence as a net exporter of refined petroleum products.
