Senate presses for timely defence spending

The Senate has demanded full and prompt implementation of Nigeria’s defence budget, warning that funding delays could weaken ongoing security operations nationwide.
The call was made during a budget defence session where the Minister of Defence presented the ministry’s 2025 performance and 2026 appropriation proposal.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Ahmed Lawan, said lawmakers are ready to ensure the armed forces receive adequate resources.
He, however, expressed concern over what he described as the slow execution of the 2025 defence budget.
Lawan questioned how the government intends to effectively plan for 2026 if allocations approved for 2025 remain under-implemented.
He stressed that defence funding cannot be treated like other sectors where projects may be postponed without immediate consequences.
According to him, any delay in releasing funds could embolden insurgents and criminal groups exploiting security gaps.
The senator insisted that troops must be equipped with modern tools and weapons to confront evolving threats.
He assured that the upper chamber would continue to support measures aimed at strengthening national security.
Describing the session as part of legislative oversight, Lawan said the committee was reviewing the ministry’s record to ensure accountability.
He noted that portions of the 2025 allocation were rolled over into the 2026 proposal due to incomplete implementation.
The committee, he added, would scrutinise the details to promote transparency and improved performance.
Meanwhile, Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, acknowledged that security challenges persist across different regions of the country.
Presenting the 2026 proposal, Musa said the ministry remains committed to improving operational outcomes despite existing constraints.
He expressed optimism that ongoing reforms and support from the National Assembly would enhance military effectiveness.
The minister also commended the defence committee for its cooperation, noting that recent gains were achieved with legislative backing.
The lawmakers are expected to continue deliberations on the budget proposal in the coming weeks.
