ADC condemns alleged attempted arrest of El-Rufai at Abuja Airport

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly condemned what it described as an attempted arrest of its member and former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, allegedly carried out without a warrant.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party expressed deep concern over what it viewed as a troubling disregard for due process and political neutrality under the current administration.

“While no individual is above the law, legal processes must not be weaponised against political opponents,” the statement read.

“Reports suggest that security operatives waited for El-Rufai at the airport with the intention of effecting an arrest, yet failed to present a warrant.

”If confirmed, such conduct undermines constitutional safeguards and the rule of law.”

The ADC also criticised what it described as a pattern of selective accountability, noting that politically exposed persons who aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) often avoid scrutiny, while critics of the government face intensified investigations.

“It increasingly appears that once you cross into the ruling party, past sins are quietly swept away,” the party said, warning that such double standards erode public trust and weaken the moral authority of government institutions.

The party called on security and law enforcement agencies to uphold professionalism and constitutional principles, stressing that coercive powers must not be used for partisan objectives.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law, the ADC insisted that political competition in Nigeria should be resolved through persuasion and the ballot, not through intimidation.
