INEC fixes February 20 for presidential poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission has unveiled the timetable for the 2027 General Elections, setting February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly polls.
Governorship and State House of Assembly elections would follow on March 6, 2027, two weeks after the federal contests.
The announcement comes despite ongoing delays in the passage of the amended Electoral Act before the National Assembly.
INEC had earlier indicated that preparations for the polls were progressing, with the schedule of activities finalised ahead of public release.
According to the timetable, political parties are to conduct their primaries between July 1 and September 30, 2026.
Submission of candidates’ lists to the commission will take place from October 1 to October 31, 2026.
The final list of cleared candidates is expected to be published on November 15, 2026.
Campaigns for presidential and National Assembly elections would commence on November 18, 2026, and end on February 19, 2027.
Governorship and State Assembly campaigns will begin on December 15, 2026, and conclude on March 5, 2027.
INEC also announced that Continuous Voter Registration will open in April 2026 and close in January 2027.
The commission said the extended registration window is designed to give eligible Nigerians sufficient time to register or update their voter details.
The timetable signals the formal commencement of activities leading to the 2027 elections, as political parties intensify preparations nationwide.
