SERAP drags CBN to court over N3trn

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has filed a lawsuit against the Central Bank of Nigeria over alleged missing public funds amounting to N3 trillion.
The suit, lodged at the Federal High Court in Abuja, follows findings contained in the 2025 report of the Auditor-General of the Federation.
SERAP is seeking a court order compelling the apex bank to account for and disclose details on the whereabouts and expenditure of the funds.
According to the group, over N1 trillion in operating surplus due to the Federal Government was not remitted to the Consolidated Revenue Fund in 2022.
The organisation also cited N629 billion allegedly paid to unidentified beneficiaries under the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme without proper recovery records.
SERAP claimed the Auditor-General raised concerns that the funds might have been diverted, urging their recovery and remittance to the treasury.
The group further alleged irregular spending, including N125 billion on intervention projects without legislative approval.
It also questioned N1.79 billion reportedly used to procure vehicles for the Nigeria Immigration Service without procurement documentation.
Additional concerns were raised over contracts valued above N189 billion, with reported variations exceeding N9 billion.
