APC dominates FCT council elections as PDP secures Gwagwalada

In a decisive outcome for the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged victorious in five of the six chairmanship contests, sweeping AMAC, Abaji, Bwari, Kwali, and Kuje.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed to secure a single seat in Gwagwalada, marking the only interruption to APC’s clean sweep.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) failed to capture any seat, a development that has sparked criticism from political commentators and online activists, some of whom attributed the party’s poor performance to leadership decisions involving Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Rotimi Amaechi.
Addressing concerns over alleged irregularities, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo maintained that minor errors in a limited number of polling units could not affect the overall credibility of the election, which involved more than 2,800 polling units across the territory.
Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced the arrest of 20 individuals accused of vote buying and obstructing electoral processes, recovering a total of N17.2 million in the process.
Commenting on the outcome, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike described the results as a demonstration of public approval for President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar called on opposition parties to unite in presenting a formidable alternative to the ruling party.
Concerns over electoral infrastructure were highlighted by activist Martins Otse, who shared footage of a dilapidated school building used as a polling station, underscoring the persistent need for investment in public facilities.
