Lagos approves 13% fare hike on BRT, standard routes

The Lagos State Government has approved a 13 per cent increase in fares across all Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) schemes, including Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and standard bus routes.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) announced the adjustment in a statement on Monday.
According to LAMATA, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the fare review following appeals from regulated public transport operators.
The new fare structure would take effect from March 2, 2026.
The state government said the adjustment is aimed at cushioning the impact of sustained economic challenges affecting transport operations.
LAMATA explained that the review aligns with the existing annual fare review mechanism.
Officials cited persistent inflationary pressures as a key factor behind the decision.
They noted that Nigeria’s inflation rate closed 2025 at 15.2 per cent, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Bus Operating Companies (BOCs), the statement said, have been grappling with rising operational costs.
These include increased expenses for vehicle maintenance, spare parts and staff salaries.
The implementation of the new national minimum wage structure was also referenced as a contributing factor.
Operators were reportedly investing in new, cleaner and more fuel-efficient buses.
The government said this is part of efforts to improve passenger comfort and promote environmental sustainability.
Authorities reassured commuters that they remained committed to balancing affordability with safe, reliable and efficient public transportation across the state.
The BRT system remains one of the major mass transit options within Lagos, serving thousands of commuters daily.
