APC defends Wike’s political choice

The All Progressives Congress says the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has the constitutional right to support any candidate of his choice.
APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday.
Morka said Wike’s political decisions should be seen within the framework of his rights as a Nigerian citizen.
He stressed that every citizen is entitled to freedom of association and political participation.
According to him, Wike is free to campaign for any candidate in an election.
Morka noted that such actions fall within constitutionally guaranteed liberties.
He argued that the matter was not about Wike’s official position in the FCT.
Rather, he said it concerns personal political convictions and lawful democratic engagement.
When asked whether the APC would tolerate similar conduct from one of its members, Morka declined to speculate.
He emphasised that Wike is not a member of the APC.
Instead, he pointed out that the minister remains in the Peoples Democratic Party.
Morka advised that questions about party discipline should be directed to the PDP.
Wike has continued to identify as a PDP member despite serving in the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
He has repeatedly dismissed rumours of defection to the APC.
The minister has described the PDP as a political platform he helped build.
Despite this, he has publicly declared support for Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He has also stated he would not contest against the president in the 2027 election.
During the recent FCT Area Council polls, Wike openly backed candidates aligned with Tinubu.
The APC secured victories in five of the six area councils.
In some instances, PDP candidates reportedly stepped down in favour of APC contenders.
The development has intensified debate over party loyalty and political alignment ahead of 2027.
