Nigeria commits to stronger diplomatic ties with Germany

Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining and expanding diplomatic relations with Germany, with a focus on multilateral cooperation, economic development, and cultural collaboration.

The pledge was made during a high-level meeting between the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Dunoma Ahmed, and the visiting German Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Annett Günther on Tuesday in Abuja.

The engagement centred on fostering economic partnerships, supporting energy sector reforms, enhancing infrastructure resilience, and preserving cultural heritage.

Amb. Ahmed highlighted Nigeria’s openness to continuous dialogue, emphasising the ministry’s readiness to facilitate discussions on mutual interests and provide clarifications on ongoing cooperative initiatives.

Germany, through Ambassador Günther, praised the longstanding bilateral relationship, citing the success of the Nigeria–Germany Bi-National Commission convened in November 2025 as a milestone in their strategic partnership.

She underscored Germany’s support for equitable global governance, including stronger African representation within the United Nations, and reaffirmed Berlin’s commitment to assisting Nigeria in energy modernisation, capacity-building initiatives, and regional security cooperation.

The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing to deepen engagement, grounded in mutual respect, shared responsibility, and a rules-based international order, ensuring sustained peace, development, and collaborative progress between the two nations.
