Police arrest five over alleged killing in Bayelsa community

Security authorities in Bayelsa State have apprehended five individuals suspected of involvement in the violent death of a man in Otuoke, Ogbia Local Government Area of the state.

The victim, identified as 38-year-old Samuel Ofiri, was reportedly tortured to death following accusations of sexual assault.

According to the police spokesperson, DSP Musa Mohammed, the command received an urgent call around 3:30 p.m. on February 22 reporting a lifeless body along Kakatar Road.

Officers responded promptly, securing the scene and transferring the body to the Federal Medical Center in Otuoke for further examination.

Investigations revealed that Ofiri had allegedly been accused of assaulting a woman.

Following the allegation, he was reportedly taken by the suspects to an apartment within the community, where he was subjected to physical abuse, which ultimately led to his death.

The five suspects were arrested at the location and are currently in custody as the case has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

The police confirmed that the suspects would face prosecution once the investigation is completed.

“This incident highlights the dangers of jungle justice and underscores the need for all cases to follow due legal process,” Mohammed said, urging the public to cooperate with authorities.

The Bayelsa Commissioner of Police cautioned residents against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that acts of vigilante justice are illegal and punishable.

Citizens were urged to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or through official hotlines, ensuring the safety and security of the community.

Police reassured the public that all reported incidents would be thoroughly investigated and warned that those engaging in unlawful actions would be held accountable.
