Delta Govt. delivers rehabilitated 32.5km Emu-Obodeti–Abbi–Abraka road

The Delta Government says it has completed the reconstruction and asphalt overlay of failed portions of the 32.5-kilometre Emu-Obodeti–Abbi–Abraka Road, a strategic route linking communities in the State.

The road, which connects parts of Ndokwa West and Ethiope East Local Government Areas, stretches from Emu-Obodeti Junction through Abbi to Abraka, serving as a major corridor for residents, among others for daily movement.

The State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Mr Reuben Izeze, announced the completion during an inspection tour of the project on Wednesday.

He was accompanied by the Functioning Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, MrSolomon Aghagba.

Izeze explained that the contract focused primarily on rehabilitating severely damaged sections of the road, particularly between kilometre 20 and kilometre 32, where pavement failure had made travel difficult and, at times, hazardous.

According to him, the intervention involved scarifying distressed sections, removing unsuitable materials, reconstructing completely failed portions, and applying new asphalt layers to restore structural integrity and durability.

“This project was essentially about addressing the failed sections. We carried out scarification of totally damaged portions and reconstructed them to standard.

”The contractor has fulfilled its obligations satisfactorily,” the commissioner said.

The project was awarded on Sept.16, 2025, to Bryhilvan Integrated at a cost of N2,681,236,071.75.

A project brief issued by the Highway Engineering Department of the Ministry of Works outlined the comprehensive scope of the rehabilitation.

The works included site clearance, scarification of distressed pavement, excavation and removal of unsuitable materials, and regulation of potholes using a 50mm binder course.

Engineers also installed crushed stone base on failed sections, applied sharp sand filling where necessary, and laid both asphaltic concrete binder and wearing courses across the rehabilitated stretches.

Izeze confirmed that all components of the contract have now been completed 100 per cent, marking full delivery of the project as of February 2026.

Beyond the contractual scope, he disclosed that the contractor undertook remedial works at the problematic Police Station Junction in Abraka, an area known for persistent pavement failure and traffic congestion.

He noted that the additional work was carried out voluntarily by the company to ease traffic flow and reduce commuter hardship, especially given that the junction fell under an existing Federal Government contract.

“They went beyond the 32 kilometres covered in the contract to improve the motorability of that junction.

”This was done to address the man-hours being lost daily in traffic due to the failed section,” Izeze said.

He described the intervention as an act of corporate social responsibility, adding that the government would assess the contractor’s claims regarding the extra work executed.

The commissioner emphasised that the improved road would have far-reaching benefits for residents and businesses, particularly in Abraka, widely regarded as a university town.

Izeze said the project aligned with the infrastructure drive of Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori, aimed at fostering sustainable development and creating an enabling environment for education and commerce.

He added that the improved connectivity would enhance safety, reduce travel time, and promote economic integration among communities along the corridor.

Izeze reaffirming the administration’s commitment to quality road delivery, th said the state government remained focused on constructing durable infrastructure.

Abraka hosts the main campus of Delta State University, and the rehabilitated road is expected to ease transportation for students, lecturers and visitors while strengthening economic activities in the area.
