Court remands Malami, family over N8.7bn charges

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has ordered the remand of former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, alongside his son, Abdulaziz and wife, Asabe.
The trio were re-arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on allegations of laundering N8.7 billion.
They pleaded not guilty to a 16-count charge shortly before the court directed their remand.
Malami and his son were ordered to be held at Kuje Correctional Centre, while Asabe was remanded at Suleja Correctional Centre.
In a related ruling, the court granted Malami and his son N200 million bail each over separate allegations involving terrorism and unlawful possession of firearms.
The charges were filed by the Department of State Services.
Justice Abdulmalik directed each defendant to provide two sureties who must own landed property in Maitama or Asokoro, Abuja.
The property titles are to be deposited with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court.
The sureties must also file affidavits of means and submit two recent passport photographs.
Malami and his son were further ordered to surrender their international passports and provide recent photographs.
The court fixed March 4 for the commencement of trial proceedings.
Pending the fulfilment of bail conditions, the defendants are to remain in custody.
The case has shifted between judges in recent weeks following administrative reassignments.
Justice Obiora Egwuatu had earlier withdrawn from the matter after it was transferred to him.
Initially, the case was handled by Justice Emeka Nwite during the Christmas vacation period.
After the vacation, the Chief Judge reassigned the proceedings before they eventually came before Justice Abdulmalik.
The defendants were first arraigned on December 30, 2025.
They were granted N500 million bail each on January 7, with strict conditions attached.
The latest arraignment marks a fresh phase in the high-profile prosecution.
