Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, has cautioned political leaders against allowing division to shape Nigeria’s future.
Governor Oborevwori delivered the message during the funeral Mass of Peter Nwaoboshi at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Ibusa, on Friday.
The governor stressed that national progress rests on unity, mutual respect, and shared responsibility among leaders across party lines.
Prominent Nigerians from diverse political, ethnic, and religious backgrounds attended the solemn ceremony in Ibusa to honour the late senator.
Oborevwori described public office as a sacred trust given by God and the electorate, urging leaders to pursue the common good above personal ambition.
He also reminded mourners that authority is fleeting, but service leaves a lasting imprint on society.
According to him, history ultimately judges leaders not by positions held, but by the positive impact made on people’s lives.
The governor called for humility in governance and respect in political engagement, noting that rivalry weakens democratic foundations.
He maintained that Nigeria’s development can only flourish in an atmosphere of cooperation and peace.
Oborevwori further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth, prudent leadership, and policies aimed at improving citizens’ welfare.
Addressing the bereaved family, he urged them to uphold Nwaoboshi’s legacy of integrity, patriotism, and dedication to Delta State and the nation.
He noted that life and death remain under divine authority, adding that meaningful service outweighs longevity.
The governor said the gathering was not only for mourning, but also for reflection on Nigeria’s direction and shared responsibilities.
He challenged leaders to embrace service over self-interest and unity over division, drawing lessons from the late senator’s life.
Quoting John 11:25, Oborevwori highlighted the Christian hope of resurrection and eternal peace for the faithful departed.
He said Nigerians must draw strength from faith during moments of grief and national introspection.
Describing Nwaoboshi as a bridge-builder, the governor said his influence transcended party boundaries and strengthened democratic ideals.
In his sermon, Very Rev. Fr. Peter Mobuogwu of the Catholic Diocese of Issele-Uku reflected on hope, accountability, and divine justice.
He reminded worshippers that time rests in God’s hands and urged them to live in readiness for divine judgment.
The funeral attracted a distinguished gathering of national figures, reflecting the late senator’s enduring political and social influence.
