Delta APC denies candidate imposition claims

The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Delta State has dismissed allegations of candidate imposition in its ongoing State Congress, describing the claims as unfounded and politically driven.

In a statement on Sunday, State Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo Esq, rejected accusations reportedly made by chairmanship aspirant, Ebiakpo Ezebri.

Ezebri had alleged that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori imposed a preferred candidate in the congress process.

The party maintained that no aspirant had been imposed as chairman, insisting that the exercise remains transparent and guided strictly by constitutional provisions.

It said the allegations were crafted to mislead members, create division and undermine confidence in what it described as a credible democratic process.

“Let it be stated clearly that no individual has been imposed as Chairman of the Delta State APC,” the statement said.

The leadership stressed that Governor Oborevwori, regarded as leader of the party in the state, has upheld internal democracy and party supremacy.

It added that linking the governor to claims of interference was irresponsible and an attempt to politicise routine party procedures.

On zoning, the party clarified that the decision to allocate the chairmanship to Delta South Senatorial District followed consultations across the three senatorial districts.

According to the statement, the arrangement was reached after broad engagement with leaders, elders and stakeholders.

The APC said the move reflects its commitment to equity, inclusiveness and unity within party ranks.

It further explained that identifying and recommending a candidate remains the responsibility of stakeholders from Delta South.

Their position, the party noted, represents a collective resolution rather than the agenda of any single individual.

The statement also dismissed suggestions of discrimination between old and new members.

It emphasised that every member, regardless of when they joined, retains the constitutional right to seek elective office within the party.

While recognising the right to contest, the APC cautioned against attempts to distort facts or discredit a legitimate process due to personal ambition.

The party assured members that the congress is being conducted in line with its constitution and national guidelines.

It warned against misinformation capable of destabilising party structures and vowed to protect internal cohesion.

Calling for discipline and maturity, the APC urged aspirants to place collective interest above personal goals.

The party expressed confidence that the outcome of the congress would reflect stakeholders’ will and strengthen its democratic credentials in Delta State.

It reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding members’ rights and preserving the integrity of the party’s processes.
