Ebonyi monarch killed by kidnappers a day after abduction

The Ndufu-Alike community in Ebonyi has been plunged into mourning following the death of Ezeogo Francis Igwe, the traditional ruler who was abducted on March 1, 2026. Igwe, father of former deputy governor Kelechi Igwe, was kidnapped while traveling to church, intercepted by armed men on a motorcycle, and taken to an undisclosed location.

Police confirmed that the monarch was killed the following day.

Ebonyi State Police Command launched immediate operations, arresting two suspects who admitted the killing and guided officers to the hideout where the remains were recovered.

A subsequent gunbattle with other gang members led to one assailant being neutralised, while seven additional suspects were later apprehended, along with a locally made pistol.

Police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu stated that the suspects are in custody and would face prosecution upon completion of investigations.

The incident has left the community grieving the loss of their leader, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the region.

The killing followed a growing trend of violent kidnappings targeting prominent individuals in Ebonyi, sparking concerns over public safety and the effectiveness of law enforcement in combating organized crime.
