PDP sets May 25 for Wike faction presidential primary

The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced May 25, 2026, as the date for its presidential primary, amid ongoing efforts by the Tanimu Turaki-led wing to reconcile party differences.
Following the 106th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, the party released a comprehensive timetable for the 2027 general elections.
Membership registration must be completed by April 10, 2026, while primaries for state assemblies, national assemblies, and governorship positions are scheduled for May 2, May 9, and May 16, respectively.
The party also approved zonal congresses in the coming weeks to pave the way for the national convention and its sub-committees.
The NEC communique emphasised the importance of reconciliation and unity among party leaders and stakeholders.
Members were urged to resolve internal disputes through dialogue rather than litigation, particularly discouraging any recourse to the Supreme Court, in order to preserve party stability ahead of the elections.
Preparations for the National Convention on March 29-30, which would elect a new National Working Committee, were also reaffirmed.
Earlier, National Caretaker Committee chairman Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed called for restraint, stressing that judicial outcomes should mark an end to internal legal battles and allow the party to focus on consolidating efforts for the 2027 polls.
Meanwhile, the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT) rejected a Court of Appeal ruling nullifying the Ibadan national convention, which had produced the Turaki-led National Working Committee.
BoT chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara described the judgement as damaging to party unity and announced the formation of a reconciliation committee to work with the Wike-aligned caretaker team.
Wabara highlighted the importance of unity and the party’s ongoing nationwide e-registration, noting the daily surge of members as evidence of PDP’s popularity.
He called on all party members to set aside personal and factional interests to strengthen the party’s position against the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 elections.
In line with the reconciliation efforts, PDP National Secretary Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja announced the postponement of the national caucus, BoT, and NEC meetings, originally scheduled for this week, to demonstrate good faith in the court-advised reconciliation process.
The BoT also appointed Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu as its new secretary and promised to announce the names of the reconciliation committee members in due course.
The developments reflect ongoing tensions within the PDP, but party leaders appear committed to a negotiated path forward to restore cohesion and maintain electoral competitiveness.
