Valverde nets hat-trick as Real Madrid thrash Man City 3-0

Federico Valverde scored his first career hat-trick as Real Madrid thrashed Manchester City 3–0 in their Champions League round-of-16 first leg Wednesday.

Pep Guardiola’s City started brightly at Santiago Bernabeu but were repeatedly punished by Madrid’s blistering counterattacks.

Valverde opened scoring in the 20th minute after Thibaut Courtois released him down the right.

The Uruguayan rounded Gianluigi Donnarumma before calmly slotting home.

Seven minutes later, Vinicius Jr slipped a pass behind City’s defence. Valverde beat the offside trap and fired a low strike into the far corner.

Madrid struck again in the 42nd minute. Brahim Diaz chipped a clever pass forward and Valverde completed his hat-trick with a superb volley after flicking the ball past Marc Guehi.

City dominated early exchanges, with Jeremy Doku troubling Trent Alexander-Arnold and helping the visitors push Real Madrid deep inside their half.

However, City’s attacking ambition left space behind, and Madrid exploited it ruthlessly through rapid transitions and long passes.

Courtois sparked the opener with a precise long ball from his box, finding Valverde unmarked on the right flank to race clear and score.

Vinicius remained Madrid’s biggest attacking threat, combining effectively with Brahim Diaz and Valverde against a City defence struggling to track runners.

The third goal came after Vinicius drove forward before switching play to Brahim, whose delicate chip allowed Valverde to lob Guehi and finish with a crisp volley.

City improved after halftime, but Courtois produced key saves to deny Antoine Semenyo and Nico O’Reilly.

Madrid later earned a penalty when Donnarumma fouled Vinicius, but the goalkeeper redeemed himself by saving the Brazilian’s low spot kick.

Despite the miss, Madrid maintained control and now travel to England for the return leg next Tuesday with a commanding advantage.
