Trump warns Iran’s world cup team over safety

U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Thursday that the Iranian national football team’s “life and safety” could be at risk if they participate in the upcoming World Cup in North America.
The warning comes amid the ongoing Middle East war, triggered by US–Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, 2026, which has put Iran’s participation in doubt.
Trump posted his comments on his Truth Social platform, saying the team is welcome but that it might not be appropriate for them to attend for safety reasons.
Earlier, FIFA President Gianni Infantino met Trump at the White House and confirmed that the Iranian team is welcome to compete despite the conflict.
The warning followed recent events involving Iran’s visiting women’s football team in Australia. Seven members had claimed asylum after being branded “traitors” in Iran for a pre-match protest.
Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke told parliament on Wednesday that one player reversed her decision after speaking with teammates, while the remaining players were moved to a secure location.
Concerns were raised that male minders traveling with the team could prevent asylum claims.
Each player was separated at Sydney Airport to make private decisions.
The squad then flew to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, arriving early Wednesday, as AFP photos from the airport showed.
This development added another layer of tension to the geopolitical situation affecting sports, travel, and safety for Iranian athletes abroad.
