Osimhen, Nwabali omitted from Eagles squad

Head coach of the Nigeria national football team, Eric Chelle, has unveiled a reshuffled squad for upcoming international friendlies, notably leaving out star striker Victor Osimhen and first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
The 23-man list, released by the Nigeria Football Federation, features a blend of experienced players and fresh talents ahead of matches against Iran national football team on March 27 and Jordan national football team on March 31.
Both fixtures, initially scheduled for Amman, will now be played in Antalya, Turkey, following security concerns linked to tensions in the Middle East.
In Osimhen’s absence, reigning African Player of the Year Ademola Lookman is expected to lead the attack, supported by forwards such as Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, and Paul Onuachu.
Captain Wilfred Ndidi would anchor the midfield alongside Alex Iwobi and Frank Onyeka, providing experience and stability.
In goal, Maduka Okoye returned to the squad and is expected to compete for the starting position with Francis Uzoho and Adebayo Adeleye.
The defensive lineup included seasoned players like Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey, alongside new invitee Emmanuel Fernandez, who earns his first senior call-up.
Chelle’s selection also introduces new attacking options, with Philip Otele and Collins Yira Sor receiving maiden invitations after impressive performances at club level.
Several players from the recent AFCON pool were omitted, including defenders Chidozie Awaziem and Ryan Alebiosu, as well as forward Cyriel Dessers.
The upcoming friendlies are expected to serve as preparation for future competitive fixtures, with Chelle using the opportunity to assess new talents and refine team cohesion.
