King Charles hosts Tinubu at Windsor banquet

Britain’s monarch, King Charles III, has praised the enduring relationship between the United Kingdom and Nigeria, describing it as a “partnership of equals” during a state banquet held in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The high-profile event, which took place at Windsor Castle, marked the first state visit by a Nigerian leader to Britain in nearly four decades.

The banquet brought together top government officials, business leaders, and cultural figures from both nations, highlighting efforts to deepen diplomatic and economic ties.

In his remarks, King Charles emphasised the strong historical and economic connections between the two countries, noting that Nigeria has emerged as a major global player.

He stated that both nations continued to benefit from mutual investments and shared progress.

The monarch also paid glowing tribute to Nigerians living in the UK, describing them as vital contributors across key sectors including healthcare, education, business, technology, and the arts.

He acknowledged their growing influence in British society, noting their impact on national development.

With a touch of humour, the King referenced a recent cultural gathering he hosted, joking about the long-standing debate over which country makes the best jollof rice, while diplomatically avoiding a definitive answer.

He further highlighted Nigeria’s cultural footprint in Britain, citing the global rise of Afrobeats music and Nollywood films as major influences shaping contemporary British culture.

According to him, Nigerian creativity continues to enrich the UK’s cultural landscape.

President Tinubu, in his response, echoed the King’s sentiments, describing the people of both nations as the “strongest bridge” linking them together.

He noted that Nigerians in the diaspora have made remarkable contributions in areas such as healthcare, sports, and innovation.

Tinubu also underscored the shared vision of progress between both countries, rooted in mutual respect and common values, adding that the visit would further strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, security, and education.

The event was attended by several high-ranking dignitaries, including Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, and Queen Camilla, alongside senior government officials and notable figures from both countries.

Earlier in the day, President Tinubu received a ceremonial welcome, complete with a guard of honour and military parade, as part of the official state visit programme.

The visit, which includes meetings with British officials such as Prime Minister Keir Starmer, is aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and recognising the important role of the Nigerian diaspora in the United Kingdom.
