Pressure from supporters pushes Sule toward 2027 senate bid

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has opened up about the factors influencing his reconsideration of running for the Nasarawa North Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.

The two-term governor, who had earlier ruled out pursuing a Senate position after completing his eight-year tenure, revealed on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday that external pressure played a key role in his shift.

“The overwhelming pressure from parents, supporters, and colleagues I have worked with over the years is so intense that it has made me reconsider,” Sule said.

“Throughout the six and a half years I have been governor, I have always followed through on every statement I made.”

Addressing suggestions that he was following the footsteps of previous governors who transitioned to the Senate, Sule dismissed such claims.

When asked if he needed the senatorial seat for personal ambition, he answered in the negative, emphasising his established reputation before assuming the governorship.

“Before I became governor, I was already highly relevant.

” I served as the managing director of African Petroleum and ran Dangote Sugar Refinery PLC, one of the most capitalised companies in Nigeria.

”My contributions to the private sector and the capital market are well recognized,” he noted.

Sule also highlighted his active political engagement. “Currently, I am Chairman of the North-Central Governors’ Forum. In two days, Nasarawa State will host the zonal congress in Lafia,” he added.

As he approaches the completion of his constitutionally mandated tenure on May 29 next year, Sule acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his successor but affirmed that several qualified candidates exist within the state.

He also discussed national governance issues, stating that state governors are transparent with President Bola Tinubu about the country’s challenges.

Sule expressed strong support for the creation of state police, saying he agrees “100 percent” with the initiative.

On the political landscape, Sule downplayed the threat from the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), stressing that the All Progressives Congress (APC), controlling 31 states, has no reason to fear a party without any governorship.
