APC South-South elects leaders, targets 2027 gains

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nigeria’s South-South region has elected a new Zonal Executive Committee, following a well-attended congress held in Asaba, Delta State.
The gathering drew key figures within the party, including the President of the Senate, governors, lawmakers and delegates from across the zone.
The exercise was conducted through a consensus arrangement, a move widely seen as reinforcing unity and internal cohesion within the party.
Proceedings began with the dissolution of the outgoing Zonal Executive Committee.
The motion was moved by the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, and seconded by Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly.
It received unanimous approval from delegates.
A second motion adopting consensus as the mode of electing new officers was moved by Senator Essien Williams and seconded by Senator Aniekan Bassey, and was equally endorsed without opposition.
At the conclusion of the process, Chief Victor Giadom emerged as National Vice Chairman (South-South).
Other members of the executive include Dr. Ita Udosen as Zonal Secretary, Barr. Neworld Safugha as Legal Adviser, Dr. Samuel Nwanosike as Publicity Secretary, Prince Urhoro Koyoyo as Youth Leader, Hon. Suobankuo Omoni as Women Leader, Hon. Prince Edward as Organising Secretary, and Prince Ayo Peter representing Persons with Disabilities.
In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio conveyed the goodwill of President Bola Tinubu and praised the South-South for its growing political cohesion.
He noted that the region had evolved from having limited APC presence to becoming a significant political bloc with increasing alignment among governors and stakeholders.
Akpabio urged party members to work towards making the South-South the highest vote-delivering region for the APC in the 2027 general elections, describing the target as both realistic and necessary.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, in his goodwill message, welcomed delegates and described the congress as a reflection of the party’s strength and readiness for future contests.
He emphasised the importance of sustained grassroots mobilization and stronger internal structures.
Also speaking, Governor Douye Diri, Chairman of the South-South Governors’ Forum, highlighted the adoption of consensus as a strategic step toward minimizing internal disputes and promoting collective ownership within the party.
He observed that the full participation of governors signaled a shared commitment to regional progress.
Governors Umo Eno, Bassey Otu, Monday Okpebholo, and Siminalayi Fubara echoed similar sentiments in separate remarks, stressing the importance of aligning the zone with the federal government.
Earlier, Chief Victor Giadom, in his address, expressed appreciation to party leaders and stakeholders for their support during his tenure, noting the APC’s growing electoral success and political expansion in the region.
In his acceptance speech, Giadom, who was re-elected, voiced optimism about the party’s prospects, pledging to build on existing gains and further strengthen its influence ahead of the 2027 elections.
The congress was attended by members of the National Assembly, State Houses of Assembly, ministers, government officials, and party stakeholders from across the South-South.
The event ended with a renewed commitment by party leaders and members to deepen unity, expand grassroots support, and consolidate the APC’s rising profile in the region.
