PDP factions take steps toward reconciliation, says Turaki

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commenced a fresh reconciliation process aimed at bridging divisions between rival factions within the party, the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) announced on Wednesday.

In a statement personally signed by Kabiru Turaki, who leads one of the party’s contending groups, he confirmed that party leaders have begun “breaking the ice” and exploring multiple avenues toward a lasting resolution.

Turaki emphasised the importance of calm and unity among party supporters, urging a de-escalation of heated rhetoric.

“We urge our supporters to immediately tone down high-tempered communications and actions, so as not to jeopardise ongoing peace efforts,” Turaki said.

“To all aspirants who have stood with us, we assure you that, by the grace of God, our party will field candidates for all elective offices in compliance with PDP’s constitution.”

Turaki also expressed gratitude to Nigerians who have continued to show interest in the party, noting that the faith of its supporters has remained steadfast despite recent challenges.

He highlighted the PDP’s role as a key opposition party, stating, “Democracy is not merely about elections; it requires a strong opposition and an active civil society to hold government accountable.

”As Nigeria’s only surviving legacy party in the current republic, with the rare privilege of having led the country for 16 years, we remain committed to defending and consolidating our democracy.”

The NWC leader reminded those in positions of authority that they serve as delegates of the people and must act in alignment with the will of the electorate.

He reiterated the party’s commitment to democracy and governance grounded in the interests of Nigerians.

Turaki further expressed confidence in the leadership of PDP governors, commending Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde for their resilience and steadfastness amid internal party challenges.

“The NWC unanimously passes a vote of confidence in our governors for their leadership,” he said.

Turaki assured Nigerians that the PDP remains vibrant and would actively participate in upcoming elections, providing a credible platform for political competition and ensuring that power ultimately resides with the people.
