Roy Hodgson returns as Bristol City interim coach

Veteran manager Roy Hodgson, 78, has returned to the dugout after being appointed interim head coach of Bristol City until the end of the season.

The Championship club confirmed Hodgson’s appointment following the dismissal of Gerhard Struber, tasking the experienced Englishman with stabilising the side in the final stretch of the campaign.

Hodgson has been out of management since February 2024, when he stepped down from Crystal Palace.

His storied career includes stints with Liverpool, Fulham, and Inter Milan, as well as leading the England national team through two European Championships and the 2014 World Cup.

The appointment marks Hodgson’s return to Bristol City more than four decades after his first spell in 1982, when he managed the club for four months, recording three wins in 21 matches.

Hodgson’s first game in charge will be away to Charlton Athletic on April 3 — 44 years after his previous match at the helm.

“I have had great conversations with the Board and I am really excited by the opportunity to help until the end of the season,” Hodgson said.

“We will get straight to work and look for a positive performance on Good Friday.”

Bristol City currently sit 16th in the Championship and have not won since February 24.

A poor run of form since mid-February has seen their play-off hopes fade, leaving them 12 points adrift of sixth place.

Despite recent struggles, the club holds an 11-point cushion above the relegation zone with seven matches remaining, giving Hodgson a platform to guide the team to safety before the season concludes.
