Tinubu rejects one-party claims, stresses opposition’s role in democracy

President Bola Tinubu has rejected allegations that his administration is steering Nigeria toward a one-party system, emphasizing that a strong opposition is essential for a thriving democracy.
Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention in Abuja on Friday, March 27, 2026, Tinubu stressed that political competition is a cornerstone of good governance.
The president responded to repeated claims by opposition parties suggesting that the APC intends to dominate Nigeria’s political landscape.
Tinubu dismissed these assertions as misplaced, reiterating his commitment to national unity and democratic principles.
“Let us say this clearly and sincerely. We are here for national unity and greatness. We are not going to look back. Critics can say it anyway they want,” he stated.
He highlighted the significance of credible opposition in improving policy and governance.
“Democracy thrives on vibrant and healthy competition. As a statesman and political leader, I believe in a credible opposition, one that can challenge, question, and help refine policies.
”That is how statecraft improves, and good governance is achieved. That is how nations advance,” Tinubu said, stressing that the constitutional right to freedom of association applies to all political actors, including members of the APC.
In addition to addressing political concerns, President Tinubu reassured Nigerians that ongoing challenges with electricity supply would soon be mitigated.
He noted that lower generation had contributed to recent power outages but highlighted plans to inject approximately 1,500 megawatts into a new grid corridor through the Grid Asset Management Company.
“Electricity will become better, and we assure you there will be opportunities and progress in our industrialisation.
”The impact of our programmes is visible, tangible, impactful, and measurable, not mere rhetoric,” he said.
The APC convention, held in the nation’s capital, comes amid growing discussions about the country’s democratic health and the role of opposition parties.
Tinubu’s remarks underscore his administration’s stance that healthy political competition is crucial for national development, policy refinement, and the advancement of democracy in Nigeria.
