Delta woos global investors with blue economy drive
The Delta State Government has unveiled plans to position the state as a major investment destination, with the forthcoming Delta State Economic and Investment Summit expected to showcase opportunities in the blue economy, agriculture, housing, creative industry, oil and gas, and other key sectors.
Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing in Asaba ahead of the three-day summit scheduled for August 3 to August 5, 2026, with the theme, “Harnessing Our Strengths, Unlocking Our Potential.”
Aniagwu said the summit would attract policy makers, business leaders and international investors, including delegations from China and Brazil, who are expected to explore investment prospects across the state.
He noted that the event has continued to receive strong backing from corporate organisations and development partners, attributing the support to growing confidence in the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Vice President Kashim Shettima is expected to declare the summit open, while World Trade Organisation Director-General, Professor Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, will deliver the keynote address.
Renowned Kenyan scholar Professor Patrick Lumumba is also billed to present a special lecture.
Aniagwu said the state had invested heavily in infrastructure, security and human capital development to create an environment capable of attracting investors.
“It is now that time we move out to bring in investors to take advantage of the ready and secured environment to establish their companies to do business with our people, ” he said.
According to him, investments attracted through the summit would create jobs, stimulate economic growth and improve the standard of living of residents.
The commissioner recalled that the state government had embarked on an investment roadshow in Brazil last year to strengthen economic partnerships and attract foreign investments.
He said one of the major attractions for investors would be Delta’s vast blue economy, supported by over 163 kilometres of Atlantic coastline, alongside opportunities in agriculture, hospitality, oil and gas and the creative sector.
“We have over 163 kilometres of coastline along the Atlantic shore, oil and gas production, hospitality industry, creative sector and the big one is the agricultural sector where we are going to showcase the enormous potential that abound in the state, ” he said.
Aniagwu added that Brazil’s expertise in livestock production had sparked interest among investors from the South American nation, while the housing sector would also be presented as a viable investment destination.
He explained that the summit aligned with Governor Oborevwori’s ‘MORE Agenda’, aimed at deepening economic growth and expanding employment opportunities across the state.
Speaking on the recent violence in Effurun, Aniagwu dismissed reports linking the incident to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a clash arising from personal rivalry rather than party politics.
“You know the difference between a political disagreement and certain level of individual rivalry, ” he said.
He alleged that some online reports deliberately misrepresented the incident to tarnish the image of the ruling party.
The commissioner disclosed that one of Governor Oborevwori’s aides sustained serious injuries during the disturbance, adding that the governor had directed security agencies to arrest those responsible.
Aniagwu urged opposition parties to focus on presenting constructive ideas instead of politicising the incident, stressing that the government would not condone acts of violence or lawlessness.
