Kwankwaso resigns from NNPP amid political realignment

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing the need for strategic repositioning in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
The announcement, made in a press statement dated March 29, 2026, marked the end of his tenure as one of the party’s most influential figures.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” Kwankwaso declared.
The former Kano State governor, who served as the party’s National Leader and Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Elections, described the decision as difficult, reflecting on his time in the party with gratitude.
“I seize this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the honour and privilege of serving as the Party’s National Leader and its Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Elections.
”As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make,” he said.
Explaining the rationale behind his resignation, Kwankwaso pointed to shifting political dynamics and the need for a platform that could better facilitate national change.
“However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he stated.
Kwankwaso also extended appreciation to the party leadership and members for their support during his tenure.
“I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and the entire National Working Committee for their steadfast support throughout my time,” he said.
“I also thank the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Committee, and all levels of leadership across the party — from the ward to the state level, as well as the legacy members of the party and all followers of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their dedication and commitment to our shared mission.”
The former NNPP leader reassured his supporters that his departure would not hinder ongoing collaboration with his political base and allies.
“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he affirmed.
Kwankwaso’s resignation is expected to have significant implications for Nigeria’s political space, sparking speculation about his next move and potential alliances ahead of upcoming elections.
