Bayelsans rally for NDC despite heavy rain

Residents from all eight local government areas of Bayelsa State turned out in large numbers in Yenagoa, undeterred by heavy rainfall, to declare support for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in a notable political gathering ahead of upcoming elections.

The rain-soaked event, held on Monday in Yenagoa, drew a significant crowd, signaling what observers describe as growing grassroots momentum for the party across the state.

In a statement, Gabriel Ukuta, Director of New Media to the NDC in Bayelsa, said the turnout demonstrated “widespread admiration and confidence” in the leadership of Henry Seriake Dickson, the party’s National Leader.

Ukuta highlighted Dickson’s political credentials, pointing to his record as a two-term governor of Bayelsa State and his current role as senator representing Bayelsa West as factors sustaining public support.

Addressing the gathering, the party’s National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, described the NDC as “the Noah’s Ark of our time,” portraying it as a refuge for “the oppressed, voiceless, and marginalized” in Bayelsa, the Niger Delta, and across Nigeria.

Cleopas also praised Dickson’s vision in establishing the party and called on citizens to align with what he termed a movement committed to delivering genuine democracy.

Earlier, Bayelsa State Chairman of the NDC, Dauperebo Ikuromo, welcomed supporters and commended their resilience, formally opening the event.

A major highlight of the rally was a wave of defections from several political parties, including the APC, PDP, ADC, and LP.

Former APC stalwart, Selekebina Saboh, announced his defection to the NDC alongside more than 10,200 supporters from across the state, pledging full commitment to the party’s ideals and leadership ahead of the elections.

Similarly, Wilson Ayakpo Dayegha, a political figure from Ekeremor Local Government Area, declared his support for the NDC, describing it as the platform capable of securing a grassroots-driven victory.

He assured party leaders of his readiness to mobilise support toward electoral success.

Other notable figures present included Hon. Pabra Igwele, Vice Chairman of the NDC in Bayelsa; Hon. Fyneman Wilson, representing the National Leader; Dr. O. Osusu; Hon. Salo Adikumo; Chief Suru Oyarede; Hon. Wisdom Fafi; and Hon. Oyinke Godbless, among others.

The gathering is seen as a significant moment in Bayelsa’s shifting political landscape, reflecting increasing realignments as parties intensify preparations for the forthcoming elections.
