Southampton stun Arsenal, reach FA Cup last four

Arsenal suffered a shocking exit from the FA Cup after falling 2-1 to second-tier side Southampton in a dramatic quarter-final clash on Saturday.
The Premier League leaders were undone by a late strike from Shea Charles at St Mary’s Stadium, sealing one of the competition’s biggest upsets this season.
Despite entering the match as clear favourites, Mikel Arteta’s side failed to assert control and paid the price for defensive lapses.
Southampton took the lead in the first half through Ross Stewart, who capitalised on a defensive error to put the hosts ahead.
Arsenal responded in the second half, with Viktor Gyokeres restoring parity after a well-worked move, but their comeback proved short-lived.
The decisive moment came late in the game when Charles found space on the edge of the box and calmly slotted home, sending the home fans into celebration and confirming Arsenal’s elimination.
For Mikel Arteta, the defeat marks another setback in the club’s pursuit of silverware.
Having already lost the League Cup final to Manchester City, the Gunners have now seen two domestic cup opportunities slip away in quick succession.
Although Arsenal remain in a strong position in the Premier League title race, holding a significant lead at the top, the loss will raise concerns about their recent inconsistency, especially given their history of faltering during crucial stages of the season.
The team was also affected by notable absences, including key players Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, while several regular starters began the match on the bench, a decision that appeared to disrupt their rhythm.
Southampton, on the other hand, celebrated a historic victory.
The Championship side, still chasing promotion to the top flight, produced a disciplined and energetic performance that echoed their famous giant-killing feats of the past.
The win sends Southampton into the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2021 and continues an impressive run of form, with the team now unbeaten in 15 matches across all competitions.
Arsenal will now turn their focus to the UEFA Champions League, where they face a crucial quarter-final tie against Sporting Lisbon, as they aim to salvage their season with European success.
