Ondo targets investors for coastal tourism development
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo, has intensified efforts to attract private investment into the state’s coastal tourism sector, saying his administration aims to engage five to ten investors to transform the Araromi coastline into a vibrant leisure destination.
The governor made the announcement on Monday during the Araromi seaside carnival in Ilaje Local Government Area, stressing the importance of strategic partnerships to harness the area’s economic potential.
Aiyedatiwa noted that although the coastline, stretching about 72 kilometres, is one of Africa’s longest, it has yet to attract sufficient investment to maximise its benefits.
He said the state government is taking deliberate steps to showcase the coastal asset to a global audience.
According to the governor, the initiative is already generating positive responses from private operators, including the introduction of basic facilities such as shelters and a mobile kitchen to improve visitor experience.
He described these contributions as signs of growing confidence in the area, gradually enhancing the beach’s appeal.
Addressing residents and visitors, Aiyedatiwa highlighted the universal allure of beach resorts and the role of oceans in recreation and trade.
“The ocean has always been part of our civilisation. It is one of God’s wonders.
”From Araromi, you can connect with the world. That is why people gather by the seaside to relax, enjoy nature and breathe fresh, uncontaminated air,” he said.
The governor encouraged attendees to embrace relaxation for mental and physical renewal, noting the health benefits of the ocean.
He revealed that the state has measured the land and finalised designs for a new beach resort, which is expected to be operational by next year.
“We are intentional about this. The state government will lead, but we welcome investors to partner with us.
”Land is available for anyone ready to develop the beach into a convenient and relaxing resort,” he added.
On security, Aiyedatiwa assured that Ilaje Local Government Area and the proposed beach resort would be among the safest in Nigeria.
“There is no kidnapping, no banditry. Maximum security will be ensured. The Atlantic Ocean flanks the area and the only access road will be properly manned,” he said.
The governor confirmed that construction of the state-led standard beach resort is expected to begin this year and be completed within a year.
He emphasised that ongoing projects, including the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, would improve access and attract more visitors.
Commissioner for Culture and Tourism Hon. Adesoji Afolabi said the Easter carnival, now in its second edition, is part of efforts to revive tourism and position Araromi beach as a global destination, with plans for modern facilities such as chalets and reception halls.
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Alhaji Amidu Takuro praised the governor’s vision as a way to showcase the state’s natural endowments.
Chairman of Ese-Odo Local Government Area, Ebimobowei Caleb Molos, described the initiative as commendable, noting that tourism development would improve livelihoods and attract industrial growth.
He added that expatriates are expected to inspect and develop the area soon, benefiting the entire state.
