Don’t rely on governors, Yusuf warns Tinubu

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abubakar Yusuf, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against relying heavily on the support of APC governors ahead of the 2027 general elections, arguing that many lack genuine grassroots popularity.

Yusuf, a former federal lawmaker, gave the warning on Sunday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme.

He maintained that while governors remain influential within party structures, their electoral value among voters may not be as strong as often assumed.

Despite his concerns, Yusuf said the ruling party is not currently threatened by opposition movements ahead of the next election cycle.

He stated that the APC is not “jittery” about the opposition, citing a lack of cohesion among rival political figures.

The APC stalwart also warned of potential internal crises within the party, noting that unresolved disagreements—particularly around candidate selection—could trigger serious divisions.

According to him, such “implosions” may lead to internal party conflicts capable of weakening the party if not carefully managed.
