IFAB approves red card rule for mouth covering in confrontations

Football’s law-making body has approved a new regulation that could see players shown a red card for covering their mouths during on-field confrontations at this summer’s FIFA World Cup.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) adopted the rule after concerns grew over player conduct and difficulties in monitoring alleged abusive exchanges during matches.
The change is aimed at improving transparency and strengthening anti-discrimination enforcement in football.
The development followed a high-profile incident involving Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior, who reported alleged racial abuse during a UEFA Champions League match in February.
The incident sparked disciplinary proceedings after the opposing player was seen covering his mouth while speaking during the exchange, prompting suspicion over the nature of the conversation.
UEFA subsequently activated its anti-discrimination protocol, temporarily halting the match while officials investigated.
The case intensified calls for stricter global rules on player behaviour during confrontations.
According to IFAB, referees will now have discretion to issue a red card if a player is deemed to be covering their mouth while engaging in a confrontational situation with an opponent.
Officials said the measure is intended to prevent concealed verbal misconduct and improve accountability on the pitch.
In a related decision, IFAB also approved immediate dismissal for players who walk off the pitch in protest during matches, as well as officials who encourage such actions.
Teams that cause matches to be abandoned may face forfeiture under the new guidelines.
Football authorities said the changes were influenced by recent disruptions in international competitions, where on-field protests have led to delays and heightened tensions.
The rule changes are expected to apply during the upcoming World Cup, where referees will operate under updated disciplinary guidance aimed at reducing misconduct and ensuring matches proceed without avoidable interruptions.
