Awoniyi double sinks Chelsea, lifts Forest

Nottingham Forest boosted their Premier League survival hopes with a commanding 3-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday, piling further pressure on the struggling hosts.

Taiwo Awoniyi marked his 100th appearance for Forest with a decisive brace, setting the tone for a dominant display that left Chelsea’s Champions League ambitions in serious doubt.

Forest struck early, taking the lead just 97 seconds into the match.

Dilane Bakwa delivered a cross that found Awoniyi, who capitalised on poor defending to head home from close range.

The visitors doubled their advantage shortly after when a penalty was awarded following a foul on Awoniyi. Igor Jesus calmly converted from the spot to make it 2-0.

Chelsea had a chance to respond before half-time but squandered it when Cole Palmer saw his penalty saved by goalkeeper Matz Sels, compounding a frustrating first-half display.

Awoniyi struck again early in the second half, tapping in from close range after being picked out by Morgan Gibbs-White to effectively seal the result.

A late consolation came through João Pedro, who scored with an acrobatic bicycle kick, but it did little to mask another poor performance from the hosts.

The defeat marks Chelsea’s sixth consecutive league loss their worst run since 1993 and leaves them ninth in the table, with their chances of securing a top-five finish and Champions League qualification fading fast.

Despite being 10 points behind fifth-placed Aston Villa with only three matches remaining, Chelsea still retain a slim mathematical chance, as a sixth-place finish could be enough depending on European outcomes.

They currently trail sixth-placed AFC Bournemouth by four points.

For Forest, the win marks a third straight league victory, moving them six points clear of the relegation zone. With just a few games left, they now require only four more points to guarantee survival.

The result also strengthens their momentum across competitions, as they remain unbeaten in their last 10 matches and continue to balance domestic survival with a push for European success.

Chelsea’s struggles, meanwhile, continue to raise questions about the club’s direction following a turbulent season marked by managerial changes and inconsistent performances.
