Turaki PDP faction insists Jonathan still party member

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki has insisted that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains a registered member of the party under its leadership, saying he recently took part in its digital membership registration exercise.
The group also dismissed as false a wave of campaign posters circulating online, which link Jonathan to different political parties and suggest possible presidential ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement released on Saturday by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the group urged the public to disregard the materials, describing them as deliberate misinformation.
“Campaign posters bearing the photographs of President Goodluck Jonathan, either alone or paired with other notable Nigerians as running mates, have emerged and are being circulated widely on social media platforms,” the statement said.
It added that the materials wrongly present Jonathan as being affiliated with various political parties featured in the designs.
According to the Turaki-led group, Jonathan remains firmly within the PDP structure under its current leadership.
“We state categorically that President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is a registered member of the Peoples Democratic Party under the capable leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN),” the statement said.
It further claimed that the former president personally completed his registration during the party’s recent digital membership exercise and later confirmed this during a meeting with the Interim National Working Committee.
“He duly registered personally in his ward during the recently concluded digital membership registration exercise, a fact he personally confirmed to members of the Interim National Working Committee during a meeting with him on Saturday,” it added.
The faction said the clarification became necessary in light of provisions of Nigeria’s Electoral Act, which prohibits multiple party registrations.
“This clarification has become necessary in view of the provisions of the extant Electoral Act, under which double registration is not only prohibited but also punishable,” it stated.
It also raised concerns that individuals might attempt to manipulate party records by registering prominent politicians in different parties without their consent.
“We are aware that mischief makers may not only design and circulate fake campaign posters, but may also, in concert with highly placed collaborators, attempt to input the details of President Jonathan and other prominent members of our party and the opposition movement into the databases of different political parties,” the statement warned.
The group called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the public to remain vigilant and ignore any such developments.
“We therefore put the public, especially the INEC, on notice of this malfeasance and urge them to discountenance any such fraudulent activity,” it concluded
