Arsenal edge West Ham 1–0 to extend premier league lead over Manchester City

Arsenal tightened their grip on the Premier League title race on Sunday with a narrow but crucial 1–0 victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium, a result that sees them move five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table.

The encounter was always expected to be a tense London derby, and it lived up to that billing, with both sides creating chances in a tightly contested first half that ended goalless.

Arsenal dominated possession and territory for long spells, but struggled to convert their superiority into clear-cut opportunities against a disciplined West Ham defence.

West Ham, however, were not content to sit back.

They showed attacking intent of their own, pressing high at moments and forcing Arsenal into hurried decisions in midfield and defence.

The home side even went close on a couple of occasions, raising tension among the travelling supporters.

The breakthrough finally came in the second half through a moment of quality from Arsenal’s captain, Martin Odegaard.

The Norwegian playmaker drifted into the box and delivered a well-timed pass to Leandro Trossard, who made no mistake with a composed finish that ultimately decided the match.

After taking the lead, Arsenal managed the game with greater control, showing maturity in slowing the tempo and restricting West Ham’s attacking rhythm.

Despite late pressure from the hosts, Arsenal’s defence held firm, with goalkeeper David Raya involved in key moments as West Ham pushed for an equaliser.

There was, however, late controversy when West Ham thought they had found a dramatic leveller.

A goal from Callum Wilson was eventually disallowed after the referee ruled an infringement on Arsenal’s goalkeeper in the build-up, sparking protests from the home side but ultimately confirming Arsenal’s victory.

The result carries significant weight in the title race. With only a few matches left in the season, Arsenal’s win puts them in a strong position ahead of Manchester City, who had earlier strengthened their challenge with a convincing win of their own.

For Arsenal, the victory was less about flair and more about resilience grinding out results in difficult away fixtures, a trait often decisive in title-winning campaigns.

As the season edges towards its climax, every point is proving vital, and Sunday’s result could be one of the defining moments of their campaign
