Museveni sworn in for 7th term in Uganda

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has been sworn in for a seventh consecutive term, extending his long-standing rule over the East African nation after four decades in power.

The 81-year-old leader took the oath of office on Tuesday in a ceremony held in the Kampala suburb of Kololo, where thousands of supporters gathered to witness the inauguration and celebrate the continuation of his presidency.

Museveni, who has governed Uganda for about 40 years, will now serve another five-year term following the latest swearing-in.

Addressing the crowd after taking the oath, the president called on Ugandans to embrace hard work and focus on wealth creation for their families, referencing examples of individuals whose business efforts had brought success.

“No more excuses,” he said.

The inauguration highlighted both continuity and uncertainty, as many Ugandans now view Museveni’s long rule as the only leadership they have known, while questions remain about the country’s future political transition.

Observers said uncertainty persists over how power transfer might unfold in the coming years, particularly as Museveni’s extended tenure continues.

His son and Army Chief, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, widely regarded as a possible successor, supervised rehearsals for the military parade that featured heavily in the inauguration events.

The ceremony also included a display of military strength, with Russian-made Sukhoi fighter jets flying over the ceremonial grounds in Kampala, adding a dramatic backdrop to the event.

The swearing-in was attended by thousands, with state ceremonies reflecting both political authority and military presence as Museveni begins another term in office.
