Oshiomhole says opposition divisions boost APC chances

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has said that internal divisions among opposition leaders will make it easier for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to win the 2027 general elections.
Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North in the Senate, made the remarks on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he argued that opposition leaders were inadvertently strengthening the APC through public disagreements.
He said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had become, in his words, the APC’s “best campaign manager” due to alleged attacks on fellow opposition figures, including Labour Party’s Peter Obi.
According to him, similar disagreements among opposition leaders such as Obi and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, reflected a lack of unity that would work in the ruling party’s favour.
“You mean that APC would be worried about which of the parties now, ADC? I saw Atiku.
”Atiku is now our best campaign manager because he is attacking Obi, and I see Obi attacking Amaechi,” Oshiomhole said.
He further argued that the opposition figures were engaged in personal criticisms rather than presenting a unified front or alternative policy direction to Nigerians.
The senator expressed confidence that the APC would defeat any coalition formed by opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
“So, the opposition can have their dreams, but they will be defeated flatly because nobody believes them,” he said.
Oshiomhole also challenged opposition leaders to clearly outline policy alternatives, including whether they intended to reverse key government decisions such as fuel subsidy removal, tax reforms, and student loan schemes introduced under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He accused opposition politicians of being united mainly by ambition for political power rather than shared ideological vision or policy direction.
According to him, President Bola Tinubu’s administration had taken difficult but necessary economic decisions aimed at restructuring the country’s economy.
Nigeria’s political landscape is already heating up ahead of the 2027 general elections, with major opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Rotimi Amaechi expected to play key roles.
Some of these figures have been linked to coalition talks under different political platforms as realignments continue ahead of party primaries.
Meanwhile, the APC has reportedly waived screening requirements for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections, with party officials describing him as automatically cleared for participation in the primaries.
